Citrus Pectin

Also Known As : Modified Citrus Pectin, Pecta-Sol

Vegetarian

Description

Pectin is a naturally occurring substance (a polysaccharide) found in the peel of citrus fruits. Modified citrus pectin (MCP) is an alternative therapy. Modified citrus pectin (MCP) usually comes in powder form. Our intestines can’t absorb pectin in its natural form. The pectin from citrus is processed to make the MCP molecules smaller so it’s more easily absorbed into our bloodstream. It is obtained from the peels, seeds and pulp of citrus fruits using a chemical extraction process. Once in the bloodstream, MCP is believed to have biological properties beneficial to human health. Although modified citrus pectin is more easily digested than natural citrus pectin, individuals with allergies or sensitivities to citrus may experience diarrhea or stomach discomfort when taking either type of citrus pectin.

Note

Pectin allergy is not very common but may occur in people who are allergic to cashew and pistachios. Due to the lack of safety research, MCP is not recommended in pregnant or breastfeeding women.(1)
