Description

Garlic originated in Central Asia and is one of the healthiest foods to be added to the diet in various forms. One such common way of consuming garlic is garlic oil. This oil is made by the method of steam distillation of fresh garlic cloves or by soaking the cloves in a carrier oil and allowing the active components of the garlic to be leached into that oil. Garlic oil has a characteristic odor due to the presence of a strong compound- diallyl disulfide.

Health benefits

  • Garlic oil contains an active compound called diallyl disulfide which is responsible for its anti-atherosclerotic effects. It has the ability to promote fibrinolytic activity (prevents blood clots). Garlic oil also increases the elasticity of blood vessels and circulation. Hence, promotes heart health. (1) 
  • It has excellent antifungal activity. It inhibits the growth of fungal species like Candida albicans and Penicillium funiculosum which have the ability to alter the expression of certain essential genes that are involved in basic regulatory functions of the body. Thus, enables normal functioning. (1) 
  • Garlic oil contains various sulfur compounds like diallyl disulfide (DADS) and diallyl trisulfide (DAT) which has the ability to prevent the oxidation and accumulation of cholesterol in the body. This helps in normal neural functioning and protects the body against neurodegenerative diseases like dementia and Alzheimer’s. (1) 
  • Allicin and other organosulfur compounds found in garlic oil are identified as the active ingredients which show inhibitory effects against Helicobacter pylori bacteria that can cause gastric cancer and several gastrointestinal (GI) disorders. (1) 
  • It has high antioxidant content and is stimulating in nature it helps to improve digestion and stimulate the peristaltic movement of the bowel. This makes it highly effective to cure constipation. (2)
  • It is known to boost metabolic activity which aids in weight loss. Due to its sulfur compounds garlic oil has the ability to give a feeling of fullness which reduces in between snacking and overeating. (2)

  • Garlic oil contains phytochemicals like allicin which have the potential to be hepatotoxic in nature when consumed in large amounts. It can cause liver disorders as well. (1)
