Golda Chingri

Also Known As : Giant River Prawn, giant freshwater prawn

Non-vegetarian

Taste Profile

It has a delicate, sweet flavor, somewhat like lobster.

Description

Golda Chingri is found throughout the tropical and subtropical areas of the Indo-Pacific region, from India to Southeast Asia and Northern Australia. It is one of the biggest freshwater prawns in the world and is widely cultivated in several countries for food. It is also known as the Malaysian prawn, freshwater scampi (India), or cherabin (Australia). They are predominantly brownish in colour but can vary. Smaller individuals may be greenish in colour and display faint vertical stripes. Their first pair of walking legs are elongated and very thin, while second pair of walking legs are much larger and powerful, especially in males. There are limited markets for live or fresh giant prawns; most are sold as frozen tails. Cooking freshwater shrimp with the heads on preserves the natural juices and enhances the delicate flavor. They can be cooked peeled or in the shell, but the meat stays firmer in the shell.
