Description
Hibiscus Sabdariffa is an attractive annual or perennial herb , a species of Hibiscus in the family Malvaceae, native to West Africa. It is a woody-based subshrub that grows 2–2.5 m tall. All its parts are edible including leaves, flowers and fruits. The leaves are alternate, green in color with reddish veins and long or short petioles. The flowers are axillary, predominantly yellow and red, epicalyx of about 12 reddish bracts and connate at base. The fruit is 5-valved, non-fleshy, 18–20 mm long by 15–18 mm wide. It looks like a bright red ovoid capsule. The fruit is ready to pick about 3 weeks after flowering. It is popular for its edible leaves and fleshy red fruit calyces.
