Description
Lavender is a flowering plant which belongs to the mint family. It's famous for its lavender-colored flowers, and the sweet fragrance they emit. This plant is grown commercially for obtaining its essential oils. Lavender oil is mainly of two types 1). lavender flower oil, which is extracted from the flower 2).lavender spike oil, which is extracted from the herb. However, the highest quality of lavender oil is derived from the fresh Lavender flowers and not any other part of the plant. The essential oil contains a mixture of phytochemicals like linalool and linalyl acetate. Lavender is thought to have derived its name from the Latin word “lavare,” meaning “to wash,” since it has been used in baths and laundry for its fragrant properties in earlier times. It has also been used for its relaxing effects on the body and mind. This oil has been used much by the Egyptians for mummification and perfumery and for the Romans in baths and for cooking. Lavender is grown extensively in northern Africa and the Mediterranean mountains, and also has its origins here. The largest producer of lavender oil in the world is Bulgaria. There exist more than 30 species of Lavender, differing from each other in their physical features or chemical compositions of their essential oils.
