Description
Orange Pekoe is a classification of black tea based upon the origin of the leaf. The tea industry uses the term orange pekoe to describe a basic, medium-grade black tea consisting of many whole tea leaves of a specific size. It is typically used by the Western market to grade the different types of teas from South Asia, especially for India and Srilanka. Chinese teas do not come under this grading system. The best quality Orange Pekoe tea consists of only the leaf buds which are picked using the pad of the fingers to avoid bruising or compromising the quality of the tea that will be produced from these. Orange pekoe tea has plenty of health benefits, such as reducing oxidation in the body. Studies suggest that black tea (orange pekoe tea is a grade of black tea) is almost as effective with its antioxidant properties as green tea. The antioxidants in orange pekoe fight free radicals and keep the body healthy at a cellular level. Since the human body is always experiencing free radical damage, orange pekoe tea is beneficial if it’s incorporated into one’s diet.
