Description

Red clover is an edible plant that belongs to the legume family. It has pink or purplish-pink to white-colored flowers with each flower having 5 narrow petals. These flowers are tubular-shaped and spread outward in different directions. The leaflets of this plant are oval from the ends and tend to be broader in the middle. Toward the center of the upper surface of each leaflet, there is usually a chevron that is white or very pale green. Usually, there are 1-3 leaflets immediately beneath each flower head, as well as several green bracts.

Health benefits

  • Red clover may help to relieve the discomforts of menopause like hot flashes. It is thus, considered helpful in treating menopausal symptoms. (1) 
  • It is found to be effective against prostate cancer. It may help to decrease the prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a protein found at elevated levels in men with prostate cancer. (1)

Note

Red clover has blood-thinning abilities and can increase the effects of anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs. Avoid taking it with blood thinners like Coumadin (warfarin). (1)
