Description
Sodium carbonate is the disodium salt of carbonic acid with alkalinizing properties. It occurs naturally on earth and can also be manufactured by mixing sodium chloride (salt) with ammonia. It is in the form of odorless, tasteless, grey-white powder or solid white powder. It forms carbonic acid and sodium hydroxide when dissolved in water. When in concentrated solutions, it is alkali with a high pH. It is used as a food additive, recognized as safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It is widely used as an ingredient in glass products, dish soap and floor cleaners.
