Sona masoori is a lightweight and aromatic medium-grain rice which is the result of a cross combination of the rice varieties Sona and Mahsuri. Sona Masoori rice is known to have small percentages of protein while being low in fat and cholesterol. This rice variety has a low glycemic index so it is the best option for diabetic patients. Sona Masoori Rice is very popular for preparation of rice porridge in many Indian festivals. It is largely exported to West Africa, South Africa, East Africa and Bangladesh.
In India, Basmati rice is more popular, but Sona basmati rice also gains popularity due to lower calories and starch. It is a rich source of manganese which is an essential element of an antioxidant. Its antioxidant is responsible for protection against damage from the free radicals.
