Description

Rum is a liquor made by fermenting then distilling sugarcane molasses or sugarcane juice. Most rums are produced in Caribbean and American countries, but also in other sugar producing countries, such as the Philippines and India. This gluten-free alcohol is typically sweet and bitter with a burnt taste, and comes in two main types, light and dark. When rum is first distilled it is a clear liquid. To make it ready to be sold, the substance is filtered several times until it is free of impurities. This makes white rum, which is usually aged for a shorter period of time than dark rums, and has a sweet, subtle flavour. White rums can vary enormously in their taste profile with some being un-aged, whilst others are aged for periods of years at a time, becoming golden, before filtration to make them clear. The alcohol content of rum ranges from 40 to 60%; this alcohol is also very popular in tropical cocktails as well as common drinks.
