Choose beetroots that are firm, smooth and have vibrant red-purple colour. Avoid ones that are soft, wrinkled and dull in colour. Beetroots are sweetest and tender from june to october. Avoid too large fresh beets with hairy taproots.
People with kidney stones should avoid beetroot in their diet. Beetroot can cause allergic reactions such as hives, fever and rashes in some people. They can also cause bloating, flatulence and cramping.(3)
