It is extremely tart when unripened, once ripened it becomes sweet.

Usage Tips

  1. Blackberries should be kept dry and they can last for two to three days.
  2. They can be used in cooking or can also be eaten fresh. They can also be used in steamed puddings.
  3. They pair well with apple, pear, almond, melon,raspberries, strawberries, blueberries and loganberries, mascarpone, ricotta, meringue, dessert wine and rum.
  4. Blackberries can also be used to make jams and jellies, chutneys and relishes,and sauces for sweet or savoury dishes.
  5. They can also be added to muffins and cereals, served with pancakes, and can be added to fruit salads and yogurt or served as a juice.
  6. They can be used to make “frozen” or other types of alcoholic cocktails such as daiquiri’s, coladas and margherita’s.

Description

Blackberry fruit is in the shape of a berry. The berries change their colour from green to red to black as it matures, each berry contains many single-seeded juicy segments (drupelets). Their stems are erect, or semi-erect, canes that arch or trail up to 7 m long. They can be green, purplish or red in color, smooth or quite hairy, round or angled, with many curved or straight prickles of different sizes and sometimes with small, stalked glands. The leaves of this plants are alternate, compound, with three or five oval leaflets. It grows from late December until April. Blackberry is native all over the temperate Northern hemisphere and South America. They are mostly found in North America and Canada. Other places where the blackberry can be found include Great Britain, New Zealand, Chile, and most of the European and Mediterranean countries.

Selection Guide

Check the bottom of the blackberry carton for dampness and stains to check that there are no moldy or crushed berries. Blackberries are best to buy at the end of August to September. Avoid the ones that are wrinkled.
