Description

Sucralose is a popular sweetener which is obtained from sugar by substituting one part of a sugar molecule with chlorine, but it has characteristics that are different from sugar like it has no calories unlike sugar and is 600 times sweeter than sugar. Sucralose is largely considered shelf-stable (prolonged shelf life) and can be used at elevated temperatures like in case of baking, canning etc. Sucralose has been approved by the FDA for use in food products and in the European Union, it has been given the additive code as E955. The most common sucralose product is sold under the brand name 'Splenda'. Food products that contain sucralose are often labelled as, 'Sugar free','Lite', 'Zero calorie', 'Sugarless'.

Health benefits

  • Reduces calorie intake–Sucralose is not metabolized in the body, thus it has no calories for the body to absorb. It passes rapidly through the body unaffected by the body’s digestive process. Thus, if used as a sweetener as compared to sugar which has calories that the body does absorb, sucralose really reduces calorie intake.(1)
  • Helpful for people with diabetes-Since sucralose is not recognized as a carbohydrate by the body, hence it has no effect on carbohydrate metabolism and the secretion of insulin. This makes it beneficial for diabetics as sucralose doesnt raise the blood glucose levels.(1)
  • It has been proved that sucralose does not support the growth of oral bacteria and hence does not promote tooth decay as opposed to sugar.(1)

Selection Guide

Usually sucralose is available in powdered form. When buying sucralose, choose a reputed brand, with sealed packaging and also check for the expiry date.

Note

Sucralose has many side effects as follows: increases the risk of digestive problems, kills gut bacteria and damages gut health, may cause cancer and weight gain.(2)
