Jouzi Halwa Recipe

Hyderabad is not only famous for its Biryani but also for it's flavourful, healthy and historical Jouzi Halwa. Its history dates back to 100 years and was first prepared by a 11year old kid. It then became famous for it's taste and the the spices used. It involves a slow cooking process. Do try our famous Jouzi (Jouz means Oats) Ki Halwa on the eve of Ramadan ?.

Methods
  • 1. Take saffola oats in a bowl. Pour water and make a smooth paste in a mixie jar.
  • 2. Transfer the paste in a large bowl. Extract oat milk from the paste by adding water and discard the oats residue.
  • 3. Heat a thick bottomed pan and pour the oat milk into it.
  • 4. In the meantime, make a fine powder of almonds and cardamom in a dry mixie jar.
  • 5. After a boil, add the above powder to the oats milk and cool on medium flame till it leaves the pan by stirring continuously.
  • 6. Mix wet broken wheat ravva and sugar to the above boiling milk.
  • 7. The whole cooking process takes approximately 1.5 hrs i.e until it becomes thick and does not touch the pan.
  • 8. Hence keep stirring continuously. Add ghee to it and mix well.
  • 9. Grind the saffron strings and pour little water or milk to it. Mix well until it dissolves completely.
  • 10. Add the above liquid mix, to the cooking mixture and mix well.
  • 11. The addition of saffron enhances the color.
  • 12. Add nutmeg powder and mace powder to the above Halwa and mix well.
  • 13. You can add kewar drops if you like. Turn off the flame of the stove.
  • 14. Transfer the famous Jouzi Halwa to a serving plate.
  • 15. Garnish with chopped almond and pumpkin seeds. You can also garnish with silver foil.
