Pasteis de nata is a Portuguese egg custard tart pastry, which is heavenly delicious. The famous pasteis de nata come from a small monastery outside of Lisbon. I have made it's vegetarian version.
1.
For custard, make a sugar syrup from sugar and water, adding a cinnamon stick.
2.
Mix custard powder in water.
3.
Add this mixture to sugar syrup, mix well to avoid lumps, and cook on low heat till it thickened.
4.
Take flour in a bowl and add chopped butter, mix well.
5.
Add very cold water as needed to knead a tight dough.
6.
Divide dough into 2 parts and roll out with a rolling pin.
7.
Place them on top of each other, Tightly roll the sheets into a log.
8.
Cut the log into 6 evenly sized pieces, and place one piece in each of the 6 wells of the muffin tin using your thumb to press outwards to form a cup.
9.
Fill each pastry cup 3/4 of the way to the top with custard, put the tray in the oven and bake until the custard starts to caramelize and the pastry goes golden brown.
10.
Delicious Pasteis de Nata (custard tart) is ready to indulge your sweet tooth.
